Overview
This is an internal web application that automates high-volume print production in a single codebase with two modules. The first generates print-material prototypes for a specialized printing technique by mapping six parameters automatically, cutting prototype preparation from 3 to 4 hours down to about 5 minutes. The second is a complex PDF generator that merges structured data with image archives and renders numbered, print-ready pages.
The Problem
Print production was manual and labor-intensive. Prototype preparation for the specialized technique and sequential numbering for every document were done by hand, creating bottlenecks, human error, and long turnaround times at volumes of hundreds to thousands of pages. The operation needed one system that could absorb raw inputs and produce both the print prototype and the final formatted PDF automatically.
My Role
I was the sole developer, from system design and data mapping to PDF generation and local server deployment. The core technical challenges were mapping heterogeneous Excel and ZIP inputs, building a technique-based prototype generator, and implementing chunked PDF generation with Browsershot (headless Chromium) so large datasets render without memory overflow or timeout.
Process
The work split into two modules in one codebase. For the print prototype module I mapped six parameters to generate material for a specialized printing technique. For the PDF module I mapped Excel data and a ZIP of images, then rendered numbered pages in chunks with Browsershot to keep memory stable.
Key Features
- 01Print prototype generator with six-parameter mapping for a specialized printing technique
- 02Dual-input pipeline: Excel spreadsheet plus ZIP archive mapped and merged automatically
- 03Automatic sequential numbering without manual input
- 04Chunked PDF generation to prevent memory overflow and server timeout
- 05Browsershot rendering: headless Chromium turns HTML templates into print-ready PDF pages
- 06Filament admin panel for non-technical operators
Challenges
The hard parts were merging two very different inputs reliably and rendering hundreds of pages without memory overflow or timeout. Browsershot also had to run inside a constrained local server, so chunking and process limits were essential.
Outcome
The system is live on a local server and used on demand for print orders. What used to be a multi-hour manual process is now a two-step upload workflow, and the most demanding part, chunked PDF generation for hundreds of pages on a constrained server, runs reliably.
